Last year at the Carolina Herrera fashion show there was what appeared to be a pretty useless gift on my seat. A dry shampoo. For blondes. Ever resourceful, I gave it to my fair-haired assistant. A couple of weeks later, she walked into the office as usual and announced, “What do you think of my hair today.” It wasn’t really a question – her hair is long, wavy, thick, and blonde. In other words, it pretty much always looks fabulous, as it did that day, and I told her so. She pointed to her scalp and told me she hadn’t washed it, but that she had sprayed it with the dry shampoo. I instantly perked up. Now this is something I can sign up for. I am loathe to wash my hair. I wish it were shorter so I could do as Helena Christensen does and never wash it; you know, the natural oils will eventually become balanced and your hair will reach a state of equilibrium, dirty hippie, rah rah rah…

Anyway, my amazing hairdresser, Christian Miller, also happens to be Orlando’s first assistant. He talked me into using it and showed me how to use it the right way. Spray it directly onto roots and comb through with your fingers or a comb. It looks powdery at first (that’s what absorbs the oil) but after you blend it it completely disappears and leaves your hair shinier, with a fresh salon smell, and bouncy as if the last time you did a blowout wasn’t three days ago. It also has Vitamin B6 to take care of your hair as you are styling it. It’s great for that slept-in look or when you are annoyed that your hair looks perfect except near the roots. This highly editorialized product is one of Marie Claire’s Best Beauty Products of the Year for 2009 and has a 100% approval rating on Makeup Alley.

There is a bigger story behind these dry styling products which I will share soon. In the meantime: Orlando Pita + T3 Refresh Volumizing Dry Shampoo, $25.
